Questions:
What is sensory processing? Sensory processing is a term that refers to the way the nervous system receives and interprets messages from the senses and turns them into appropriate motor and behavioral responses. There are 7 senses? We are all familiar with the 5 senses of touch, taste, smell, sound and sight, but OTs include vestibular (movement & balance) and proprioception (position in space) as important human senses. The vestibular and proprioceptive systems are important parts of sensory integration and regulation. They are quietly important in overall learning too! What is 'heavy work' and why is it important? 'Heavy work' is a term therapists use to talk about the needs of the proprioceptive system. Just as adults may go for a run or take deep breaths to regulate their sensory systems, heavy work can help kids calm, organize, and/or alert their sensory systems. |
